August 2024 Energy Hardship Report
Energy affordability is a persistent problem that spans seasons. According to three years of data collected by the National Energy Assistance Directors Association (NEADA), more than one in five households report being unable to pay their utility bill at least once during the year. Utility debt has increased by 8.4% since December 2023, to almost $17.4 billion, and this $17.4 billion in debt is spread across 17.4 million electric and 11 million natural gas households. Utility shut offs are projected to increase by 300,000 households, to 3.5 million in total, by the end of 2024.
