Senators Jack Reed and Susan M. Collins sent a letter last week to the Senate Committee on Appropriations and the House Committee on Appropriations, requesting emergency supplemental funding for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).
Households are facing historical prices for home energy, as highlighted in the letter. The emergency supplemental funding will help low-income households through the upcoming winter heating season.
Previously, the Senate Appropriations Committee provided $4 billion for LIHEAP in the Federal Fiscal Year (FFY) 2023 appropriations bill for Labor/HHS/Education, an increase of $200 million over FFY 2022 funding. The House also proposed $4 billion for LIHEAP. The two bills will need to be reconciled later in the appropriations process.
