Senators Reed and Murkowski Push for Supplemental LIHEAP Funding

October 12, 2023 by Adrian Connor

Last week Senators Reed (D-RI) and Murkowski (R-AK) sent a letter to the Department of Health and Human Services and the White House Office of Management and Budget urging approval of additional supplemental funding for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) similar to the $2 billion in aid that was provided for FY 23. The letter was a bipartisan effort signed by 28 senators.

Winter heating prices are expected to remain high; the number of households receiving assistance for FY 23 is up by an estimated 1.5 million. The emergency supplemental funding will help low-income households through the upcoming winter heating and cooling seasons. Without the supplemental funding, LIHEAP will only see $4.1 billion in funding this year, instead of last year’s $6.1 billion.

NEADA will continue to provide updates on LIHEAP funding for FY 2024.
