Date: January 7, 2002

The FY 2002 Labor/HHS/Education Appropriations bill provides $1.7 billion for LIHEAP for FY 2002, a $300 million increase over $1.4 billion provided for in FY 2001. The bill also provided $300 million in emergency contingency funds for FY 2002. This is in addition to the $300 million in contingency funds that were provided in FY 2001 and that carry over to FY 2002. As a result, the total amount of emergency contingency funds available for FY 2002 is $600 million. The bill was passed in late December and is awaiting the President’s signature. It is expected that he will sign the bill within the next 10 days.
